Maple Walnut Sauce

1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa 1/8 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup water 1/3 cup 2% low fat milk 1/3 cup finely chopped walnuts 2 teaspoons imitation maple flavoring 1/2 teaspoon imitation butter flavoring 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Directions: Combine first 4 ingredients in a 1 quart glass measure; stir well. Gradually add water and milk to dry ingredients, stirring with a wire whisk until blended. Stir in walnuts. Microwave at HIGH 4 minutes or until thickened and bubbly, stirring with a wire whisk every 2 minutes. Stir in maple and butter flavorings and vanilla. Serve warm or at room temperature over pancakes or low fat vanilla ice cream. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Conventional Directions: Combine first 4 ingredients in a small saucepan; stir well. Gradually stir in water and milk, stirring until blended; stir in walnuts. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, 10 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat; stir in maple and butter flavorings and vanilla. Yield: 1 cup plus 3 tablespoons. |
